Hello there~
Don’t you just love the way a kitchen looks with a nice island in it? I do…crazy little qwerk, I know!
I also love all the different pieces of furniture people use to create an island….maybe it’s the not-so-normal furniture that’s used that makes me love it..whatever it is, I love islands!
In the past, I have used an old dresser, a microwave cart and a cabinet base for an island.
This kitchen of ours is perfect, but it’s missing an island. Even though our kitchen is a good size, an island needed to be on the smaller size.
I surely did not want to pay store prices for an island, and since I’m all about repurposing furniture, I began to search for that perfect piece.
I found it one night on a local mobile garage sale site.
It was the perfect size in length and width, but not in height.
I snagged this serving cart for $50.00. It sat in our garage while I brainstormed for a few weeks. While I was brainstorming, I at least removed the hardware, the front door, the top and the bottom feet.
In one of my past islands, I had a piece of butcher block wood cut and put together at our local sawmill. It was 2’x4’x 1 1.2″.
I knew that butcher block was going to be the top piece, but I had to get it to the right height somehow….I remembered that I had 4 leg pieces from a coffee table that I had created several years ago and was no longer needing, so they were just hanging out, taking up space in the basement.
There! It was all coming together now….I figured out the top and how I was going to raise it to the right height.
Now…I’m not a huge fan of sanding furniture especially if it has intricate areas, and this cabinet had some detail, that I was not in the mood to sand.
I use Maison Blanche vintage furniture paint and wax. It is my favorite!! It is very similar to Annie Sloan paint.
For this island, I chose “wrought iron” paint and antique dark wax.
I love this look and the finish!
I drilled holes into the bottom of the table at the four ends and holes into the new legs that I was adding.
Then, I inserted dowels about 3 inches long, and used gorilla glue to secure the legs to the cabinet.
I ended up cutting the butcher block top down to 40″ long. I still think I may need to take some off the sides. I tend to think that it has too much of an overhang.
I love the size and the way it turned out. I did make it to sit a bit taller than the average cabinet/counter height, but it’s easier on the back.
Overall, it was a very easy project and I think it turned out great!
Thanks for stopping by!!
